Honour societies are based on the idea of giving honor to people who show excellent results results in a particular endeavors. Though the field they specialize in may differ from one society to the other, most of them are geared towards educational excellence. This means that one can come across societies that are concerned about excellence in music or art. It is possible to come across many honor groups within one particular state. To help consolidate the many societies that can be formed, certain states prefer to come up with an honor society that will somehow envelop the numerous societies available thus making it easier for them to interact and thus uphold excellence as a whole.
Honor societies in the same field only allow membership into one of the societies such that by joining one society upholding excellence in education, they cannot join another honor society upholding the same discipline. The idea behind this restriction is because the societies share the same purpose hence there is no need to join another of the same kind. The society may offer it members items such as cards or tussles for recognition but also as a form of a fundraiser. Joining these societies enables members to enjoy a lot of benefits although not everyone is open to join them.
Most schools have a chapter, which allows the interested parties to submit their applications for membership into the honor societies. With each honor society trying to recognize and uphold high levels of excellence, this rolls down to the members where they can only join the society if they are have attained a certain set level of excellence. One of the ways in which the societies reward their member is extending scholarships for the members who show great levels of excellence. The societies come up with projects form their members to undertake whereby they are given a chance to obtain skills in a particular field. Leadership training is also another advantage that they members get to enjoy which is felt by the influence they have on their pears.
The honor society is not just limited to the school systems even though this is where the majority of their members are, but puts into account the members who are already into the career field because most have just graduated from the tertiary institutions. Another benefit that cannot escape one’s notice is the fact that the honor society creates a powerful network of people doing their best which enables every person to have an opportunity to challenge the ones who are yet to get to their level while at the same time learn from those who are in the level that one wants to get to. The incorporation of members in different stages of education is also a strategy to ensure that this culture is passed on to the younger generations.
